Character Types

VAMPIRES

Powers | Creation | Dynamics | Leaving | Community

The undead. Vampires can eat and drink just as they could while living, but only gain sustenance from blood. The fresher and more human the blood is, the longer the energetic effect is. Vampires can survive on animal and donor blood, but it is far less satisfying.

Demigod blood tastes the best. Drug-like highs and aphrodisiac effects. Addictive.

Shapeshifter blood tastes the worst. Vampires are allergic. A small amount will not kill a vampire, but things will get very uncomfortable (e.g. intense pain, bleeding from facial orifices).

Mutant blood tastes like their respective abilities. A vampire that drinks from a mutant with an ability similar to his/her ability will get a brief surge in power. Adversely, a vampire that drinks from a mutant with an ability directly contrary to his/her ability will get sick.

Ingesting vampire blood is addictive and will give the recipient (regardless of race) euphoric highs, making vampire blood a hot commodity in the drug trade network and the black market. It is not legal to sell or harvest vampire blood within Hong Kong, but both are common enough practices. The older the vampire, the better the vampire's diet - the stronger the effects of the blood.

Age does not make a vampire stronger. A person’s strength of character influences how strong they are in the afterlife. A weak person makes for a weak vampire and vice versa.

Pros: increased senses and strength (the ability to lift 3x their own weight), long-lived, healing process can be halved by increased blood intake, generally family oriented/loyal, true death comes with difficulty
Cons: require blood to sustain undead life, cannot produce heat, cannot conceive or impregnate, higher probability of disillusionment and insanity with greater age, restricted to one ability, minor allergy to garlic, sustains burns when touched by direct sunlight, holy items (of any faith), or when entering a private household uninvited

SHAPESHIFTERS

Powers | Creation | Dynamics | Leaving | Community

Shapeshifters come in all species, but one person may only shapeshift into one species, into one breed of that species. The size of a person in their shapeshifted form will be relative to their size as a human (e.g. a small girl will only become a comparatively small bear).

Social tendencies of shapeshifters – whether they’re solitary or communal – are heavily dependent on the species of shapeshifter.

Only wolf shapeshifters are tied to the functions of the moon.

Pros: increased senses and strength (the ability to lift 3x their own weight), more durable and with greater recovery speeds than the average human, never cold, can switch forms at will (with the exception of wolf shapeshifters), generally community oriented
Cons: prolonged stay in animal form can cause permanent changes in the human form, severe allergy to silver, contagious

DEMIGODS

Powers | Creation | Dynamics | Leaving | Community

Demigods have both mortal blood and celestial blood running through their veins. The term covers all religions and cultures. Children of mythological beings (e.g. deities, angels, demons, fae, etc.) fall under this category.

Shapeshifters of the demigod variety are typically less prone to being communal, but the marked difference between them and regular shapeshifters is that demigod shapeshifters may have the ability to mind speak while in animal form. They cannot, in any circumstance, read minds.

Most demigod children grow up individually and only meet their half siblings in cities with a high density of magical beings such as Hong Kong or in privately established schools.

Pros: greatest variety for abilities next to mutants, multitude of inherent plotlines (spontaneous siblings), can have up to two abilities – one major, one minor
Cons: have an “ethereal” quality about them that can sometimes make their lineage obvious to those who know what to look for, often have no personal connection to their deity parental figure, primary and secondary abilities restricted to the genre of their parents’ rule

MUTANTS

Powers | Creation | Dynamics | Leaving | Community

Mutants are altered on the most fundamental level – genetically. Their tie to magic is unclear and not understood. All that is known is that they, like any other supernatural faction in Hong Kong, require magic to function.

While demigods and mutants are similar in many ways in terms of ability and power, the primary difference between them is their history/background.

Pros: can most easily blend with the normal population, least effected by the magic decay when stepping outside of a power zone, resilient and evolved for survival, can have up to two abilities – one major, one minor
Cons: the most vulnerable and unorganized of the factions – even more so than the demigods, mutant abilities have a tendency to be more difficult to control/wild

HUMANS

Dynamics | Community

Humans, for the most part, are unaware of the supernatural community and the existence of magic, especially with how the population has been steadily dwindling over the years. There are many different types of people of course, and players are welcome to play whatever they like, but categories can be narrowed down to three very general types.

Civilians – self-explanatory; civilians can be new or old to the city

Mediums – humans with one foot in the supernatural world and one foot out of it. This category usually includes weak seers and psychics, the type that are usually known to the world as charlatans but occasionally prove to have some true talent

Radicals – humans who are aware of the existence of the supernatural, usually through violent means or personal tragedy. This category includes bounty hunters funded by an underground resistance group looking to rid the world of unnatural evils. Funding for the group is currently unknown, but hunters are encouraged to bring bounties in unharmed for the purpose of rehabilitation. Occasionally hunts go awry.

UNSORTED
These are supernaturals who are in Hong Kong but do not fit in any of the represented classes in the City Council. They are governed and protected by City laws, but they are considered a minority group, and so they generally have less say in things concerning the community.

Any minority species to be brought into the community must be discussed with the mod beforehand.
